Waterstones review

This a delightfully laid-back autobiography by one of Britain’s wittiest comedians, written in a rambling style – literally, as the author prefaces each chapter with a description of a walk around London.  This might sound strange but it fits perfectly with Mitchell’s intense and tangential logic, whereby he hammers home his point with the forcefulness of a jack-hammer but at the same time with such a delicate touch as to make even the most left-field of thoughts palatable.

If you think you know what sort of middle-class person he is (to be fair, this is the persona portrayed on such game-shows as ‘Would I lie to you’), then this book will make you think again, as his roots are much more humble than you might expect – his mother is a Swansea girl, his maternal grandparents used to run a garage in the Uplands and he even goes as far as to support Wales in the rugby… and he also mentions that the best ice-cream in the world is Joe’s!!!

This a rip-snorting roller-coaster-ride through the life of a very interesting and amusing chap – which, had it been written by someone else, might have been a fairly ordinary description of growing up.  As well as random rants and wonderfully funny observations, it has insights into Peep-Show and the many other TV and radio shows he has appeared on.  A good, interesting and fun read.
