Music

Gabrielle Aplin

Who?

A nineteen year-old singer songwriter from Bath.

What?

One of those “YouTube sensations” that happen every couple of days, only this one sounds like she might be good enough to stick. She doesn’t have an affectation for not wearing shoes, which is promising.

Sounds like…

Paperweight/Kate McGill/The Narrative/Mindy Gledhill. Folky and cute. Songs about friends, family and times that are a changin’. Hits the high notes, plays the guitar, and plinks about a bit on the piano too. Her song Ghosts is our fave.

Where can I listen?

Her EP’s are on Spotify and available for download. She’s performing at Clwb Ifor Bach in Cardiff on the 29th of February, tickets are £6.

Film

Ondine

Who?

Colin Farrell, Alicja Bachleda-Curus, Stephen Rea and Alison Barry.

What?

Syracuse (Farrell) is an Irish fisherman and recovering alcoholic, with a wheelchair-bound daughter (Annie, played by Alison Barry) who suffers from kidney failure and an annoying ex-wife). Working out at sea one day, he finds a young woman, Ondine, (Bachleda-Curus) caught up in his net. Superb cast, atmospheric setting, and… Colin Farrell.

Looks like…

Colin Farrell can pull off the “scruffy alcoholic fisherman” look.

Where can I watch?

You can pick up the DVD for a measly £4 in HMV.

Literature

The Strain Trilogy

Who?

Spanish director Guillermo Del Toro, (Pan’s Labyrinth, Cronos) and American author Chuck Hogan.

What?

A new take on the vampire myth. If you feel the urge to cross yourself when you hear the word “Twilight”, then this co-written series will give you something to grin about.

Looks like…

Vampires have their bite back. Del Toro’s mastery of horror is as good in writing as it is on the screen.

Where can I find it?

In the dead of night. Only kidding. Any good bookshop, Amazon, eBay, etc. Download it on to your Kindle if you must.
